Yes, there are many …
Yes, there are many great guitarists who never learned how to read music but they are not great BECAUSE they never learned to read music
You can communicate by speaking and get by in our world, but it sure is helpful to know how to read and write, correct? It saves you a lot of time
Most guitarists do not learn to read because it is a difficult and unenjoyable process; the books go too fast and the exercises sound bad.

Do what works for …
Do what works for you; this system helps people SIGHT READ music with fewer mistakes. When I solo, I use economy picking, just like the guitar players you mentioned. That will be covered in the soloing lessons. Patience please!

I realize it is not …
I realize it is not a new system, however you will find players such as Frank Gambale, Allan Holdsworth, Jason Becker and countless other guitars prefer economy picking or even alternate picking for that matter.

You don’t have to, …
You don’t have to, but you will make fewer mistakes when you sight read if you follow this system. It’s not a new picking system; this is what the pro’s use.
